Using Echo Sounding
Echo sounding is used by Ships, submarines, sonar devices to measure water depth or map seabeds.
The submarine emits a high frequency sound wave, which hits the seabed and is then reflected back to the submarine.
The time taken for the high frequency sound wave to travel from the submarine, to the seabed and then return to the submarine is recorded.
High frequency sound waves travel about 1500m/s in water.
If the wave took 0.3 seconds to return
Be Careful!
Most of the time, you will be given the time period for the return journey. This means going from the boat, to the seabed, then back to the boat.
However, it is possible you may have the time period for only a single journey. This might be from the boat to the seabed, or the seabed to boat. If this is the case, you do not need to use the divide by 2 in the formula!
You will need to read the questions carefully!
Practice Question
1.State what echosounding is used for.
2. Explain how echo souding can be used by boats.
3. State the formula for calculating the depth of water.
4. A surface vessel emits a high frequency sound wave and detects a sound wave 0.8 seconds later. Assuming that the sound wave travels at 1500m/s, calculate the depth of water.
