Answers to AQA GCSE Acceleration

Answers to AQA GCSE Acceleration

Practice Questions

1.State the definition of acceleration.

Rate of change of velocity

2.If a car increases its velocity from 10 m/s to 30 m/s in 5 seconds, what is its acceleration?

Acceleration = Change in velocity/time

Change in velocity = 30-10 = 20m/s

Acceleration = 20/5 = 4m/s2

3.What does a negative acceleration indicate?

Negative acceleration (deceleration) indicates that an object is slowing down.

4.If an object moves with constant velocity, what is its acceleration?

Zero, because there is no change in velocity. This does assume the object travels in the same direction!

5.A car decelerates from 25 m/s to 5 m/s in 4 seconds. What is its acceleration?

Acceleration = Change in velocity/time

Change in velocity = 5-25 = -20m/s

Acceleration -20/4 = 5m/s2

6.A ball is dropped from a height on Earth. What is its initial acceleration?

9.8m/s2 in a downward direction

All objects when dropped on Earth will have this acceleration, it is known as the acceleration due to gravity

7.If an object’s acceleration is zero, what can be said about its motion?

It moves with constant velocity or is at rest.
