Calculating Weight

Formula for calulating weight, W = mg. Uses triangle, includes units of Newtons, kg and N/kg

On Earth, the value for g = 9.8 N/kg. On different planets, the vary of g can vary. 

Sample Questions

1.A man has a mass of 60kg on Earth. Assuming g = 9.8N/kg, calculate his weight

W = m x g

W = 60 x 9.8 

W = 588N

2.  The label on a weight has worn off and it cannot be seen. However, when Ben placed the weight on a balance it had a mass of 60g. Calculate its weight, assuming that g = 9.8N/kg

Convert 60g to kg

60/1000 = 0.06kg

W = m x g

W = 0.06 x 9.8

W = 0.588N

3. Planet Zeeburger has an unknown value for gravitational field strength. However, Barry has a mass of 75kg and a weight of 450N on Zeeburger. Calculate the value for gravitational field strength

g = W/m

g = 450/75

g = 6N/kg

4. On Earth a person has a weight of 1176N. Calulate their mass. Assume g = 9.8N/kg.

m = W/g

m = 1176/9.8 

m = 120kg
