Answers to AQA GCSE Nuclear Fusion

AQA GCSE Nuclear Fusion

Practice Questions

1. State the definition of nuclear fusion

Nuclear fusion is the joining of two light nuclei to form a heavier nucleus.

2.Explain the origin of energy that is released from stars

During nuclear fusion, there is a change in mass, which corresponds to a change in energy

3. Why do experimental fusion reactors currently use more energy than they can release?

The nuclei during fusion repel. It takes a lot of energy to overcome this repulsion. So, on Earth, more energy is used to raise the temperature to allow the fusion to occur than energy released, during the fusion process.
