Answers to Practice Questions

1.For each of the following examples, state the useful output energy and the wasted output energy:

Hairdryer being used to show useful and wasted energy forms

Useful energy output:
Thermal energy store of the air increases

Kinetic energy store of the air increases

Wasted energy output:
Energy is transferred by radiation as sound waves from fan in hair dryer to the surroundings

Energy is transferred by heating, to cause the thermal energy store of the hair dryer case to increase

Light bulb energy transfer

Useful energy output:
Energy is transferred by radiation as light waves

Wasted energy output:

Energy is transferred by radiation to the thermal energy store of the surroundings.

Electric Motor being used to show energy transfers for useful output energy and wasted output energy

Useful energy output:
Kinetic energy store increases as the motor arm rotates

Wasted energy output:

Thermal energy store of the motor increases

Energy is transferred by radiation as sound waves to the surroundings
