Answers to AQA GCSE Cloning (Biology)

Practice Questions

1.What is meant by the term clone?

A clone is a cell or organism that is genetically identical to another, meaning it has exactly the same DNA.

2.Outline the process of adult cell cloning.

The nucleus is removed from an unfertilised egg cell
The nucleus from an adult body cell (e.g. skin cell) is taken
This nucleus is inserted into the empty egg cell
An electric shock stimulates the egg to divide
The cell divides to form an embryo
The embryo is implanted into the womb of a female
The offspring produced is a clone of the adult cell donor (genetically identical)

3.Why are hormones given to female animals in embryo transfer?

Hormones are given to female animals to stimulate the ovaries to release multiple eggs (superovulation).

This increases the number of embryos that can be produced and collected.
