Answers to AQA GCSE Rate of blood flow (Biology)

Practice Questions

1.Blood flows through a vessel at a rate of 120 cm³ in 30 seconds. Calculate the rate of blood flow.

Rate = volume of blood/time taken

Rate = 120/30 = 40 cm3/s

2.A person’s heart rate is 95 beats per minute, and their stroke volume is 60 cm³ per beat.
Calculate the cardiac output (rate of blood flow from the heart).

Cardiac output = Heart rate × Stroke volume

Cardiac output = 95 x 60

Cardiac output (rate of blood flow) = 5700 cm3/min

3. Use the following table to answer the next question.

Time (s)Volume of blood (cm3)
00
1040
2090
30130
Calculate the average rate of blood flow between 10 s and 30 s.

Time period = 30-10 = 20 seconds

Volume of blood = 130 – 40  = 90 cm3

Rate = volume of blood/time taken

Rate = 90/20 = 4.5 cm3/s

4. Jandeep keeps feeling very tired. Her doctor measured her pulse rate and found it to be lower than normal. How could her heart rate be corrected?

A pacemaker can be used to correct her irregular heart rate
