Answers to AQA GCSE Translocation (Biology)

Practice Questions

1.State the definition of translocation

Translocation is the movement of food molecules (sucrose and amino acids) through phloem tissue.

2.Sucrose is transported from the leaves to the root. Explain why

In the leaves, photosynthesis produces glucose.

The glucose is converted into sucrose, which can be transported through the phloem.

The roots need sucrose for respiration (to release energy for growth and active transport).

Some of the sucrose is converted into starch and stored for later use, especially over winter.

3. Explain what is meant by bidirectional flow.

Bidirectional flow means that substances can move in both directions within the phloem — upwards and downwards in the plant.
